Travel competition: Win a day trip to The Newt in Somerset’s Great Garden Escape

Take a break this summer with a weekend day trip to the gentle rolling hills and idyllic scenery of Somerset, courtesy of The Newt in Somerset The Great Garden Escape, in partnership with Great Western Railway. The winner and three guests will have the chance to explore the unspoiled woodlands and gorgeous gardens of this estate, which dates back to the late 1600s.

After enjoying a first-class train ride from London Paddington with a breakfast picnic from The Newt’s Estate Head Chef Alan Stewart, you’ll arrive for a guided tour of the grounds and an immersive experience that digs into the history of gardening. There’s plenty of opportunity to explore, with free time scheduled in so you can wander through the estate and Victorian-inspired Winter Garden at your own pace between sitting down for a delicious lunch in the Garden Café and browsing through the Farm Shop. You might even catch sight of the majestic native deer.

If your walk through the ancient surroundings works up a thirst, it’s sure to be sated during the cyder-tasting experience, which is also included in the prize. On the return train ride home, reminisce about the day’s adventures while working through an afternoon-tea hamper.

And this needn’t be your last visit to The Newt – also included in the prize is a 12-month membership to the gardens, so you can return whenever you choose over the next year to marvel at the changing of the seasons.

This competition closes on Thursday 26 August 2021. The prize is subject to availability and must be taken before Saturday 25 September 2021. Travel must be taken to and from London Paddington Station to Castle Cary Train Station at the time specified on tickets only.

To be in with a chance of winning, answer the following question:

What is the surname of the family who bought the estate in 1785 and remained its owners for more than 230 years?
